In Buddhist practice, the 49 days following a passing are considered a spiritually important period. It is believed that the deceased has not yet fully passed into their next existence, and that the prayers and merit made during this time can help guide their journey.
What the 49 days represent
The period is divided into seven weeks. Emphasis is placed on making offerings and dedicating prayers to the deceased, with weekly prayers commonly conducted to generate merit. The main focus tends to fall on the first week (the 7th day, 头七), and subsequent key weeks through to the 49th day.
How families observe it
After the funeral, the memorial tablet, incense urn and the deceased’s photograph are placed at a temple or at home, creating a peaceful space for remembrance and prayer. Families may:
- Conduct or attend weekly prayers over the seven weeks
- Make vegetarian offerings and light incense at the tablet
- Invite a monk to chant and perform prayer services
- Continue acts of generosity in the name of their loved one
